Best track on "Paradise, Hawaiian style" LP 1966
I´d like to smash two flies at once and start two polls at the same time. We are now (together wíth F & J, Harum Scarum) at the lowest point in Elvis LP production. Some people will probably add "Kissin´ cousins" and "Double trouble", and even "Clambake" but at least there were a few strong tracks including bonus tracks. And the worst thing at all is that this short LP has only ten tracks, which means that there´s no need to remove my number one hate song by Elvis: "Queenie Wahine's Papaya" with that terrible faster and faster ending!!! But strangely I prefer listening to this album than the above mentioned because, for some reason, Elvis does his very best with those corny (quite a few) songs. But he sounds strained on the title track. A song like "datin´" or "A dog´ life" are very poor material, but couldn´t hardly been better performed by Elvis. Just like "Harum Scarum" this album gets a bit better at the end. "Stop where you are", "This is my heaven" and "House of sand is quite ok. But best of all, this album has one gem and it´s the end song which was cut from the movie. I love "Sand castles" and is my favourite underground classic by Elvis from the movie years. The sound on the album is a lot better than the latest albums.
Time to vote!!!

At a pre-production meeting of the film company execs:
Top Exec: Now this Paradise Elvis thing...
Junior Exec: Yes sir, we've lined up the usual crap songs.
Top Exec: That's the problem, a couple are above par.
Junior Exec: Oh, sorry about that. Yes, 'This Is My Heaven' is pretty good for an Elvis film.
Top Exec: Shorten it as much as possible.
Junior Exec: We'll get him to sing just a few lines. But that 'Sand Castles' is even better....
Top Exec: Cut it altogether, then.
Junior Exec: Yes, sir !
Top Exec: If we raise standards, they'll expect it all the time....

'LOL* There are more examples of cutting good/average songs and leave worse ones in the movie: Anyone, You´re the boss, It won´t be long, How can you lose, to name a few.ColinB wrote:At a pre-production meeting of the film company execs:

This Lp is horrible. Elvis must have been so embarrassed recording this crap. It's becomes even worse when you think about what other artists were bringing out the same year. For instance the Beatles released Revolver a month later and the Stones released Aftermath a few months earlier
Opinions are like a-s-s-h-o-l-e-s: everyone has got one

Yes, there was a period in the 60's when it was embarrassing to be an Elvis fan.Rigs wrote:This Lp is horrible.

Especially when we knew what music he was capable of doing !
With the right songs & backing, he could have blown the opposition out of the water.
And we got PHS....................... ah, well.............

Recording this crap, ( which I'm sure embarrassed Elvis ), might have helped him achieve his brilliance in the 68 special, who knows!ColinB wrote:Yes, there was a period in the 60's when it was embarrassing to be an Elvis fan.Rigs wrote:This Lp is horrible.

not a good soundtrack , hardly listening to this LP ( together with FRANKIE & JOHNNY )
there is only one song that i like from it: SANDS CASTLES !
there is also one good thing in that LP: the cover ( taken from FUN IN ACAPULCO ) also the back cover very colourfull , very hawaii, love it!
sincerely

I'm quite fond of "Drums of the Islands". "Datin'" almost becomes a work of art in outtake form -- for how Elvis keeps cracking up and disguising his utter hatred for the record. "Sand Castles" is pretty sweet. I also enjoy the overblown lyric on the title track. But there's very little to recommend here (IMO).
