Best track on "Elvis Country" LP 1971
This album was released shortly after THWII, so I thought that the poll also should come fast .
This time around, the problem is even worse to exclude two tracks, because here we talk about one of his very best albums. I find "It´s your baby, you rock it" a bit lightweighted compared to the other tracks. And "Snowbird" sounds a bit to much like Anne Murray´s version. But I like those tracks as well, but two have to go.
The rest of the tracks are very good and some are perfect. It´s easy to say that a track like "Little cabin on hte hill" is simple music, but it proves that Elvis´almost could tackle any type of music and make it to his own. This is pure fun.
The one take on "Whole lotta shakin´goin on" is the rawest studio vocal cut of Elvis in the 70´s (the endig is remarkable). "I washed my hands in muddy water" is also a terrific rocker. Cool guitar licks are to be found on "The fool" but otherwise it´s Burton´s use of Dobro that really shines here (Make the world go away" & "Funny how time slips away" comes to my mind).
"There goes my everything" shows us how good Elvis was vocally in 1970 (his take on the religous "He´s my everything" isn´t quite as good).
For me here is 2 tracks that makes my heart beat a bit faster and it is the slow "Funny how time slips away" and the vocal workout on "I really don´t want to know". On the latter Elvis really sounds desperate. It´s gonna get my vote. But the whole album get´s 5 points of 5 possible. And yes, I like the in and out effect of "I was born about...".
Vote on!

I like them all. My fave has always been "Tomorrow Never Comes."

"Tomorrow Never Comes" gets my vote. I fell in love with it the first time I heard it.
There's not a track on this album that I'm not fond of though.

A poll to vote on the 'best' track on an album, when there isn't an option to vote for some of them, is kinda silly, isn't it ?

Agreed, because I would actually vote for Snowbird. I love it, corny as it may be.ColinB wrote:A poll to vote on the 'best' track on an album, when there isn't an option to vote for some of them, is kinda silly, isn't it ?
As it is, I placed my X next to I Washed My Hands. Which is a very different kind of song to Snowbird!

Re: Best track on "Elvis Country" LP 1971
There are songs much more "corny" than "Snowbird." I've always preferred Elvis' version over Anne Murray's, but, hey.....that's just me.
Beneath this snowy mantle cold and clean
The unborn grass lies waiting
for its coat to turn to green
The snowbird sings a song he always sings
And speaks to me of flowers
that will bloom again in spring
When I was young my heart was young then too
Anything that it would tell me,
that's the thing that I would do
But now I feel such emptiness within
For the thing that I want most in life
Is the thing that I can't win
Spread your tiny wings and fly away
And take the snow back with you
Where it came from on that day
The one I love forever is untrue
And if I could you know
that I would fly away with you
The breeze along the river seems to say
That she'll only break my heart again
should I decide to stay
So little snowbird take me with you when you go
To that land of gentle breezes
where the peaceful waters flow
Spread your tiny wings and fly away
And take the snow back with you
Where it came from on that day
The one I love forever is untrue
And if I could you know
that I would fly away with you
Yeah, if I could you know that I would fly away with you
Oh yeah....there are much cornier.

I'm sure it's not just you! To my ears Anne Murray's version sounds like slick MOR pop, whereas Elvis's version sounds terrific.Rob wrote:There are songs much more "corny" than "Snowbird." I've always preferred Elvis' version over Anne Murray's, but, hey.....that's just me.

I almost cried when I removed that track. You know the 10 track limit in those polls. It could have got my vote on almost any other album by Elvis, but know it´s on this mega good record. Perhaps someone can start a poll of which track two tracks to remove...

Make The World Go Away would be out for starters....that's the track I least care for. Plus maybe Little Cabin.dreambear wrote:Perhaps someone can start a poll of which track two tracks to remove...
But Snowbird and It's Your Baby are amongst my favourite Elvis tunes from 1970.

It highlights what I was saying, a poll limited to 10 options is no good for something that requires 12.....................dreambear wrote:familyjules wrote:Where's Snowbird?

We can still count "Snowbird" although it won't automatically be tallied. We can keep track of it ourselves. So far, it's easy.
"Snowbird" is now officially on a write-in ballot.

It's more complicated than that - for me you'll have to add 1 vote for Snowbird and minus 1 vote for I Washed My Hands.Rob wrote:We can still count "Snowbird" although it won't automatically be tallied. We can keep track of it ourselves. So far, it's easy.

I too would have dumped "Make The World Go Away" in favour of "Snowbird" - I love this track. Personally I would have dumped "Little Cabin On The Hill" also.
My vote was cast for "Funny How Time Slips Away" - exquisite singing from Elvis and some fantastic dobro work from JB.

Re: Best track on "Elvis Country" LP 1971
Little Cabin is good and funky so I don't know why it should be excluded. Snowbird sure seems to be popular which I understand but I think it's the first song people really miss on one of these polls. Me I gotta go for Whole Lotta Shakin. Elvis is just wild here. Amazing album.

Re: Best track on "Elvis Country" LP 1971
I also prefer Elvis´version. What I mean is that Elvis seemed to be a bit in a hurry in september and wanted the recording session to be finished as quick as possible. That might be the reason that the arrangement of "Snowbird" shows some similarities to Anne Murray´s version. Some other songs on the album is a bit more "Elvis" if you understand me. Still, Snowbird is a very good track.Rob wrote:There are songs much more "corny" than "Snowbird." I've always preferred Elvis' version over Anne Murray's, but, hey.....that's just me.

Re: Best track on "Elvis Country" LP 1971
I got the I'm 10,000 years old version of this on matthew's recommendation (thanks again btw) and have only listened to it a couple of times, but Tomorrow never Comes gets my vote, love the way he really shots out Tomorrow and the instruments make it sound really theatrical.. Make the World go away is another fave on here, I think it's the most soulful version I have heard Elvis singing it.
I saw Elvis live in concert the year before he died. Even then, he was bigger than life, and had amazing charisma. Haven't seen anything like it since, ....until Adam.........Nocturnal 2010
