Robinson Center Music Hall - Little Rock, AR

OK, gang, here we go again. You all are going to grow weary of this soon enough, I know it. :D

Elvis made three appearances at the Robinson Memorial Auditorium in Little Rock, Arkansas: two 1955 shows and a single 1956 appearance, which marked his last "Natural State" concert appearance until 1972. The building, since renamed the Robinson Center (RC) in 1981, is still very much intact and largely appears the way it would have looked when Elvis played there over 50 years ago.

Image

Image

Situated in downtown Little Rock right on the Arkansas River, the RC was originally completed by the WPA in 1939. It does feature that so-often seen, massive almost over-built style of building familiar in WPA construction of the era. It projects a definite sense of permanence and stability, which I'm sure were two emotions that were fleeting in the days during the Great Depression.

Image

Image

Image

Image

It was named "Robinson Memorial Auditorium" in honor of Arkansas Senator Joseph T. Robinson. The RC is now a large convention center complex of its own and is attached to the spacious DoubleTree Hotel; it is on the west end of the Statehouse Plaza. In its current form, the RC has exhibit space, meeting rooms, and a performance theater.... which is the part we here are interested in, right?

Image

The lobby mirrors the outside styling with the large vertical columns, and tile flooring is still in place and period-correct:

Image

Image

In the RH corner of the lobby, a plaque hangs in honor and memory of Senator Robinson and details some of his works.

Image

The Music Hall (MH) is just off the lobby area, with controlled entrance doors:

Image

The MH was a little spooky until the lights came up fully, I must admit.... I looked for any fleeting signs of our hero, but, alas, I saw nothing. Not one white buck shoe, no leather guitar case, nada. Zip.

Image

Image

The MH seats a total of 2,609 people in its current configuration: orchestra, mezzanine, and balcony sections. I do not know how this relates to the seating configuration in use when Elvis appeared, but I would surmise that the seating was similar.

Some views from the performance stage itself; in the second image you can clearly see some of the period architecture elements used in the wall stylings that carry through from the front lobby.

Image

Image

A look at the beautifully preserved original ceiling light fixtures:

Image

A view of the stage area rigging; I was told that this is all new, but probably similar to what was used back then:

Image

The onstage view of the orchestra pit.....

Image

....and the view Elvis would have had of all those hollering Arkansans! This is center stage looking out:

Image

There are some signs in the stage area of the age of the building. For instance, the period-looking brick work on the back wall with the radiator still in place:

Image

There is one dressing room on the stage level over to the RH side of the floor:

Image

While this room has obviously been remodeled, its layout harkens back to an earlier era.... note the "water closet" style bath facilities in the room itself.

The rest of the dressing rooms are below stage level, and the stairway down to them was a great look at the era of the building's construction. Unfortunately, they were quite steep and I thought it better to make it down safely than try to concentrate on getting an image of the narrow corridors. Sorry.

The dressing room level below the stage features three large dressing rooms that I observed, a green room, and several chorus halls.

Image

Image

Again, despite the modern amenities, it's not too hard to imagine Elvis perhaps using one of these rooms to prepare for his set on those evenings. I'm sure there was probably a steady stream of performers going up and down the narrow stairway as well.

Just a few steps from the lower dressing rooms and.... TaDa!

Image

Back up into the orchestra pit.... the view of the audience:

Image

and of center stage....

Image

Back outside, some more views of the exterior and its styling elements....

Image

Image

The current vehicle side entry door:

Image

And a view of the back entrance doors. I don't know if this is where performers came in during Elvis's day or not, but these doors are below stage level.

Image

Image

That about covers it, folks.

A huge thank you goes out to 1) Jennifer Scritchfield of the Little Rock Conventions and Visitors Bureau (LRCVB) who took me on this comprehensive tour of the Robinson Center.... and also 2) Carol Dolan of the LRCVB who helped set me up with Ms. Scritchfield. Without their assistance, this documentation trip would not have been possible.

Hopefully, we've seen at least a place or two that Elvis passed through when he was here in LR in the 1950s. What do you think?

That's a beautiful building Frankie! Thanks - the photos are GREAT!

I think you've got the bug now Frankie -- keep it up please :D

I saw Elvis live in concert the year before he died. Even then, he was bigger than life, and had amazing charisma. Haven't seen anything like it since, ....until Adam.........Nocturnal 2010

Beautiful Frankie. Just beautiful.

I visited LR back in 1991 when I did research for my book and at the Arkansas Stale Library (or maybe it was the Historical Society, don't remember) I was met by a very kind lady who the next day brought her very personal Elvis-scrapbook from the 50's for me to look at.

This here is a bad copy from a microfiche of how Elvis looked on May 16, 1956 at Robinson Memorial Auditorium.

Sincerely
Brian

Cool! Thanks Brian. I wondered if you had anything from then. I tweaked that a little. Unfortunately without a lot of work there isn't too much that can be done with it quicky.

Glad everyone is enjoying this look at some more "Elvis-ology".

James - I was very fortunate. Ms. Scritchfield basically asked me where I wanted to go and what I wanted to see; when your host will do that for you, documenting a venue is easy enough.

LD - when something like this is so fun to do, it's hard NOT to get the bug to keep it up.

Brian - EUREKA! That's a cool image you posted from the 1956 show. Isn't it amazing how people will "come out of the woodwork" with stuff to help you out on quests like that sometimes? It reaffirms my faith in the innate goodness of people every single time it happens.

He should have lost the bow-tie, though.... he looks too straight-laced. We all know he wasn't....

Still, at the time a bow tie was still in fashion. Scotty only ever had the one that you see him wearing with various pictures. He still has it.

I don't think it's been mentioned yet but, of course, this venue is particularly significant in Elvis history because of the surviving recording of the show and backstage interview that took place here in May 1956.

For that reason it's more than just another venue. Very nice to see these recent photos. Thanks FrankieRider2.

Yes, indeed. When the Little Rock recording of May 16, 1956 surfaced in 1989, I was FLOORED.

The sound, the performance, it was a SUPERB release. The only drawback was knowing it was one of the only shows on that tour where he did not perform his unreleased cover of the Platters single, "Only You."

Elvis Rocks Little Rock (Bilko 1589)

God bless them Bilko boys.

1989 was a good year for landmark Presley bootlegs -- we also got the super-improved edition of the MDQ tapes, in a beautiful two-record set, that year.

OH! And thanks for the GREAT topic, Frankie.

After hearing this show today and the accompanying interview, one must assume that Elvis indeed used the stage-level dressing room shown above on that day. The proximity of the interviewer to the on-stage area makes the use of the lower level rooms pretty much out of the question.

Did you try to locate the photograher? Did the newspaper keep pictures on file etc?

RockabillyLover, I contacted the newspaper back in the late 1980's when I first found this newspaper-clipping. They told me they had no photos at all from Elvis' earlier years.

However, I only spoke with the photo guy on the phone and I don't know if he really KNEW for certain or if he just THOUGHT they didn't have any.

Try again. Worth a shot. Maybe the photo guy found something by now. Anyways, good job finding that 'one' picture etc.
