Re: Memories ( the song )
An average to good song, brilliantly performed by Elvis. Another standout performance from June 1968.

Re: Memories ( the song )
First of all, your poll lacks an option for "Excellent." The fact that your highest choice is "Very Good" makes this latest un-scientific poll kind of a waste.tcb4 wrote:Do you enjoy it like Elvis or do you hate it like Sam Phillips
Secondly, Sam Phillips did not "hate" the song. He told Elvis that where the singer had chosen to place "Memories" in his August 1969 set was a mistake, as it stopped the rhythm of the show. Phillips was correct.
The studio recording from June 1968 is stunning. It's got a near-perfect vocal from Elvis despite some lyrics that were pretty damn maudlin, and the arrangement is heart-breaking, with Tommy Tedesco's delicate guitar arpeggios and Larry Knechtal's single-note bass line.
Tedesco later recalled hearing "Memories" on the radio and crying, because, when he worked that session, he had been going through a very painful divorce. Your can hear this emotion in his playing.
The 1969 live recording of "Memories" is inconsequential -- the arrangement places it in a higher key, puts too many instruments in the mix and, unlike the studio master, Elvis sings it with almost no personal attachment.
And that's the way it is.

I'd also say: A mediocre song, a very good performance that in parts even shows something like excellence.

Re: Memories ( the song )
And the 24th July, 1970 studio 'rehearsal' version, with its animal impressions, general goofing around and whatever, totally destroys any remaining credence the song may have had !drjohncarpenter wrote:...The 1969 live recording of "Memories" is inconsequential -- the arrangement places it in a higher key, puts too many instruments in the mix and, unlike the studio master, Elvis sings it with almost no personal attachment.

I heard that people were walking out all over the place. One guy was even heard saying, "I can't stay here. The rhythm of the show is all messed up now."drjohncarpenter wrote:Sam Phillips did not "hate" the song. It had to have been very uncomfortable for our star attraction.

It would make a perfect medley with This Is Our Dance.
(provided of course that Elvis intentionally sung the 2 songs together in this fashion and did not just do it on the spur of the moment)

You do know that he does not want to be ridiculed. And still.
Can't you just, for once, say: "You are right. I have just learned a lot."
Is that so difficult.

I would never ridicule the Doc. I love him too damned much. Just bringing my point across in my own special kind of way.
That's just the way I am. Don't go and try to change me now.

Do not think for a moment I am too old to notice when you are getting sarcastic.Rob wrote:I would never ridicule the Doc. I love him too damned much. Just bringing my point across in my own special kind of way.
We all have to live together on this board. Peacefully. And if you refuse to show some respect, it is not going to happen.
I know that you have your opinion. Good. Fine. But it is not necessary to tell your opinion to everyone. Have I made myself clear.

Sarcastic? Me? I'd love for you to show me any post of mine that features a hint of sarcasm.

At the present time, yes.drjohncarpenter wrote:That you know more about music than Sam Phillips?
I seriously doubt that anyone in attendance, other than Sam, of course, felt that the rhythm of the show had been ruined.
They were all too much in awe to notice anything of the sort.
Re: Memories ( the song )
Sam also thougt that Elvis' sound was destroyed by adding a piano and The Jordanaires. I think, he had a very special way of looking at music. As much as I like the man: We should not care too much about it.Rob wrote:At the present time, yes.drjohncarpenter wrote:That you know more about music than Sam Phillips?

What I've been wondering about ever since I first listened to it: Why does Elvis introduce Memories as being "From my recent TV-show - which was pretty bad but: Can't win 'em all!"??

Yes, a medley has to be a pre-planned, premeditated, deliberate act.BIGREDG wrote:It would make a perfect medley with This Is Our Dance.

Glad that's sunk in at last.......................
