FTD 'On Tour' Deluxe Release Confirmed

#1838228

Post by Rocker84 »

FTD 'On Tour' Deluxe Release Confirmed: As many fans have suspected, FTD have now confirmed that they will be releasing a special 'On Tour' deluxe release to celebrate the film's 50th Anniversary.
For fans of the 'TTWII deluxe set' that was released last year, this is GREAT news.
A "big" FTD production for September / October 2021 is also noted.

FTD author David English posted.
... "In response to many questions I have received, I can confirm that both Pål Granlund and myself are busy working on an FTD 'On Tour' project for the 50th Anniversary of the movie, with a tentative release date - August / September 2022 (Audio elements will be included though not finalised).

If any collectors own any materials/ photos/ documents in relation to the movie, Elvis On Tour, then please get in contact with me at david_memphis@hotmail.com

In addition, we are putting the final elements together for a big 2021 September / October release - more details to follow.

With thanks - David"

Any speculation about what the "big" Sept/Oct release will be?

At some point, there has to be a 1971 release this year for copyright reasons, but I'm not sure how that can be a book project.

So another book/CD projectwill be born trying to force fans to buy a book to get unreleased music .
A shame on FTD to treat long-time collectors that way.
Where is the problem to release also the included CD separatly even if the price would be a bit higher as usual?

This new policy really makes me sick !!!

Don't agree at all with all the negativity towards the set. I love my FTD books that come from David to death and am so glad that EoT will get the same treatment. It is such a labour of love and gives a deep insight into the making of the movie as has never been done before.
To pick up the line of another poster: "Your continous negativity makes me sick".

This is fantastic news. If the books contain the same amount of information as the TTWII-books, we will finally know what there is available in the vaults.

Great to read, that you are totally in love to buy a 200/300 USD book with some unreleased tracks.
To me it is as lovely as If I want to buy a car and I am forced to buy also a trailer which I dont need and do not want to get.
I am a man and I am totally uninterested to look at 1000 Elvis pictures. I am a music lover and have totally no interest to look at pictures which were made every 3 seconds and being unable to see a difference viewing 20 or 30 shots which were made between Elvis was singing the line "Don't Be Cruel to a heart thats true"....

Be very interesting if they locate any new shows outside of the 4 multi track recorded shows we know of just 1 different gig would mean so much i guess we just have to be patient and wait but it does sound exciting

I remember sitting in the cinema in 1972 watching On Tour on the big screen, and thinking to myself... "This is all very well. But what I really need is some deep insight into the making of the movie as has never been done before. Then I might actually enjoy it."

It's a 50-year dream come true!
Yeah, always the same people trolling around. Anything new?

That is a very one-sided view of the problem. Nobody here wants to deny the great work and attention to detail within these book projects. One should rather see it according to this motto: "Let every man seek heaven in his own fashion". Seriuosly, what speaks against offering several variants? Not every fan can and wants to afford such expensive luxury sets. Not every fan is enthusiastic about books. I think it's a shame that we are not (always) given a choice. But perhaps the approach here is similar to the "A Boy From Tupelo" project? First they'll publish the luxury set and later they'll sell the "poor mans" version for the mainstream market... :smt102

Either way: I'll wait and see what happens. I also make it dependent on what "musical framework program" they have to offer us...
But that is not what has mostly been written by these persons. It was usually just bashing of the books per se and hence the work of David English (and Pal). And that is not okay by any standard.
And even though I wouldn't mind different editions of such a release that is most likely simply not viable as the market is pretty small already and to further fraction it doesn't seem like a good approach as I see it.

ONTOURCAM : anythings possible but they only recorded the FOUR shows we know off !
who knows why? aside from it being a costly process!

looking at a tape legend of hampton roads though it kind of insinuates that "cant help falling in love " & the closing vamp was caught by al pachucki from the AFTERNOON show
(testing the gear/levels i would assume!)

however, i could be completely wrong there and they may have just written out the tape legend backwards ??

Nothing like quoting info like this and listing your own website as the source... thanks for correcting that Rich.

Anyway, as long as the complete Hampton Roads and Greensboro shows are included, I'm in.

NO - Its Not a public domain issue in the case of the nashville 71 recordings because they are already out there (released) therefore protected, they have been covered on numerous FTD's such as NOW & the Christmas release etc - they dont need to re-release any of that to protect it ! its only material thats NEVER been released the PD laws apply too

I think you may be thinking about the Erik Lorentzen books. No FTD book made by David English matches the above description you gave. Did you bother to even read David's FTD books? They are not just picture books.

The book and cd sets always look amazing, but I wish that FTD would offer an option of just a cd set for those who can't afford the books but really want the music.

It is anything that hasn't been released officially before. And there is a significant amount of that with regards to the 1971 sessions - even if you count just the undubbed or unedited masters. Most of that which is left is hardly exciting, but that's beside the point. Keeping undubbed or unedited masters unreleased leaves the way open for public domain companies to release them.

Now, much material only appears to have been released from acetates on bootlegs (and may only exist on acetate), but FTD/Sony are surely not going to leave those unreleased officially either - if only for the simple reason that, if the tapes turn up containing that material in years to come, Sony would have lost the copyright in UK and Europe. There is a precedent in releasing these acetates anyway - FTD have already released a handful on the His Songs of Praise set.

Why record more than 4 shows? There was never a plan to release even a complete album of On Tour material, let alone a complete show. Sony had probably had their fingers burned in the summer of 1970 - half a dozen shows were recorded, and only four songs had been released from those hours or tapes.

fair point, its not really something i feel the need to debate especially as its pure speculation on our part anyway! you could be right, they had only recorded select songs & not whole shows in February a few months earlier and obviously the same 2 years before but then you could question why they recorded so many complete shows in vegas 69, which are almost identical!

you could also argue why did they follow/film the whole tour with an 11 camera crew when all they really needed was Hampton Roads !

why this? why that? i dont claim to know the answers and most of the time the logic wasnt there that we now have in hindsite either .

It's too bad they likely won't be able make a deal with the person who bought the Buffalo show at the auction. That would have been a nice surprise for fans on the anniversary. We will probably never see it again.

That's why I did not get the deluxe Amiga set because I was hoping the it would get the FTD treatment. It will most likely be similar to the Deluxe TTWII set but this one I will buy.
