Elvis in Graceland 1965 ?
Is this pic really from 1965? I mean Elvis is wearing his wardrobe from Viva Las Vegas (filmed through September 1963).

Yes, it's from '65. He gave an interview, as well.

It's an authentic Memphis image from 1965.Vegas70 wrote:Is this pic really from 1965?
This and many other photos were taken for a Sunday magazine article, written by James Kingsley.
Elvis Presley posed with one of his cars outside Graceland in this photograph published March 7, 1965, in the first issue of Mid-South, the now-defunct Sunday magazine of The Commercial Appeal. Elvis complained of the long sessions with photographers making movie publicity stills: 'I try to cut the time down to three or four hours, but sometimes you have to pose for six or eight. A man only has so many different smiles, and I don't have many.'
Elvis fiddles with an electric bass inside Graceland in this photograph published March 7, 1965, in the first issue of Mid-South, the now-defunct Sunday magazine of The Commercial Appeal. Elvis had misgivings about allowing pictures to be made inside his home. 'It's not that I don't want pictures,' he said. 'You know what I mean. Some people might think I am looking for publicity or trying to exploit my home. I certainly don't want anyone to think that.'

Nice pix and good background info, thanks.
What was the purpose of the interview?
Why would our publicity-shy hero have done this?

Well, it was 1965. The lowest point Elvis had as an artist. Maybe he just wanted to make sure that the world knew he still existed and cared, as a musician. See him at the piano or playing electrical bass! I would say that he wanted the fans and the world to know that he was and is still a musician that cared and that he wanted an audience somehow.

Presley had just turned 30 years old on January 8.George Smith wrote:Nice pix and good background info, thanks.

And he was moving into his tenth year with RCA Records, both milestones.
It would be great to see a scan of the entire article.

EMM ran a piece on this rare interview back in issue 78 [Dec '07]. I don't have it to hand but If memory serves me right I think it reproduced the entire article.drjohncarpenter wrote:Presley had just turned 30 years old on January 8.George Smith wrote:Nice pix and good background info, thanks.

Re: Elvis in Graceland 1965 ?
Obviously, someone at EMM had a copy of the Sunday magazine piece in order to make a transcription. What I have never seen is the actual 1965 article. A scan would be awesome.

Perhaps one of our intrepid FECC'ers can visit a Memphis library on an upcoming visit, and find the article on microfilm.

Re: Elvis in Graceland 1965 ?
I have that paper with the article. I'll post it. Forgive my scans, I can't scan the whole page at once as it's too big for my scanner. So each page will have two scans to show it all.
The cover.
The cover.

Re: Elvis in Graceland 1965 ?
This is really cool. Is there more to page 1 than what you posted?
And can you post the rest of the pages? I'd like to read the entire piece by Kingsley as it appeared in 1965.
Thank you again.

Re: Elvis in Graceland 1965 ?
Page 1 is just that picture. It cut the sides off. Missing are the A in the "At home" and the Y in "Presley". That's all there is to that page.drjohncarpenter wrote:This is really cool. Is there more to page 1 than what you posted?
