Elvis & Bobbie Gentry
Elvis was a fan and vice versa --Bobbie's 'Ode To Billy Joe' was an Elvis favourite. Having gotten word of her Elvis tribute during her Las Vegas shows in the early 1970s , Elvis and gang attended her shows > with possible many a late night singing session after hours backstage...
There's great footage on YouTube of Bobbie & Bobby Darin singing a medley including 'Polk Salad Annie' -- interestingly Bobbie version of 'Nikki Hoeky' has 'Polk' elements during the intro...

Yes, great artist. That's why you should try to get her name right. It's Bobbie.

Re: Elvis & Bobbie Gentry
Bobbie was an excellent singer and songwriter who unfortunately didn't record very much. - I think she released about 8 LPs for Capitol including one with Glen Campbell. She retired from live performances pretty early -I don't recall her doing any concerts in many years . Still her recorded legacy is excellant including a few classic songs .

Re: Elvis & Bobbie Gentry
The summer of 67. The 'Summer of Love' and I heard Ode To Billy Joe on the radio it seemed like every 20 minutes. Its a great song, and Bobbie's vocal is just great. I thought she would be a mega country star but she never reached that height again with her records. I have that 1967 album and it is quite good. Love her smokey voice. She did a few duets with Glen Campbell (they were both Capitol recording artists) that charted, then she seemed to fade away. I'll take her over most female country stars that came later. Underrated.

Seductive & melancholia > what a great combination!Greystoke wrote:Here's another great video from the BBC. Bobbie was such wonderful singer whose voice had many qualities. She was expert at communicating a lyric and telling the story of a song, with her tone being warm and inviting, but seductive and melancholy in equal measure. I like her music very much.

Yes, and no one has yet mentioned the fact that Bobbie Gentry was super-sexy, too. Elvis fiddles with Gentry's signature song during his September 1967 RCA Nashville session for "Hi-Heel Sneakers," just prior to the master take. I've very sure that they jammed in his Hilton suite in the summer of 1972, among other times:a mess of polk salad wrote:Elvis was a fan and vice versa --Bobbie's 'Ode To Billy Joe' was an Elvis favourite. Fabulous Las Vegas - August 19, 1972
Finally, can you imagine if she and Elvis had waxed this incredible rocker as a duet and released it?
Bobbie Gentry and Jody Reynolds, "Requiem For Love" (Titan 1736, circa 1964) --> CLICK HERE
Details: Jody Reynolds: vocal, guitar; Bobbie Gentry: vocal; Bob Craig: piano; Ron Coppola: drums; Frank Seely: bass.
Recorded in Los Angeles, CA
The released version with Jody Reynolds was not a hit, issued before Gentry's breakthrough in 1967 (and possibly reissued after that).

She sure was super sexy! The Jody Reynolds duet reminds me of the Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazelwood song, 'Summer Wind' I think it was, sounds just great and the wonderful guitar figure. And by golly, ready made for Elvis & Bobbie...drjohncarpenter wrote:Yes, and no one has yet mentioned the fact that Bobbie Gentry was super-sexy, too. Re: Elvis & Bobbie Gentry
Oh wow... I have all the Raven Records reissues and I was always hoping for such a box set. I hadn't realized it's finally happening. Thanks for the heads-up and for the interview link. I agree with most points Mr. Batt is making (I kind of disagree with his view on her recordings for Warner Bros. from the late 1970's). But I was never too fond about the duets with Glen Clambell. Somehow his and Bobbie Gentry's voice didn't fit very well (in my ears). I think the one with Jody Reynolds works better. And I imagine a duet with Elvis would sound wounderful, but I'm sure Mr. Parker would have killed such an idea immediately.jeremylr on Wed Aug 29, 2018 9:58 pm wrote:If you check out the below Medium link, Universal archivist and producer Andrew Batt chats about "The Girl from Chickasaw County — The Complete Capitol Masters," a chronologically sequenced 8-CD box set due out October 12. Thank you. I regret not asking Andrew Batt about the 1966 Jody Reynolds collaboration--"Stranger in the Mirror" b/w "Requiem for Love"--available on the tiny Titan Records.

Henry, I concur with your positive assessment regarding Bobbie's Warner Bros. singles and assorted tracks from the late '70s cut with "Ode to Billie Joe" arranger Jimmie Haskell. "He Did Me Wrong but He Did It Right" and "Slow Cookin'" just ooze sultry funk.

That's the best thing I've read for ages, so much amazing info and spent the early part of this morning reading with great pleasure about everything Bobbie Gentry... the photos are great too. I was amazed to see a photo from 2000 of Bobbie and think her step-brother... Just FANTASTIC stuff!jeremylr wrote:If you check out the below Medium link, Universal archivist and producer Andrew Batt chats about "The Girl from Chickasaw County — The Complete Capitol Masters," a chronologically sequenced 8-CD box set due out October 12. P. S. Loads of great YouTube links of her songs I haven't heard. Songs from PATCHWORK and additional tunes from the new box set... However, here's some favourites I found recently...
Found recently just sublime~ with the Hollies - - >
Love this one too with Bobby Darin...
