In my opinion you cannot say that this many streams equates to this many sales. Times move on and the modern charts should be on streams alone. If for instance here in the UK Ed Shearan has 1 million streams in a week of his next single and lets say Ariana Grande has 900 thousand then Ed Shearans single is number 1 in the UK charts for that week. Maybe have a seperate chart for current Cd & vinyl sales but to combine them, to me seems useless. I don't care if Elvis never charts again his achievements & recorded legacy speaks for itself as does anyone else who is now deceased or no longer an active artist. Music is far more accessible now than it ever was and to try and compare current artists sales and chart statistics to previous generations is silly really.
But you can and it is and this is what has been agreed by the various parties involved. There are separate album charts based on pure sales and also charts that cover vinyl only. I don’t think anyone is comparing Elvis or any other iconic artists from decades ago with the current mega popular artists, which as you state would be completely pointless.

But to do a rough comparison of artists from days gone by, George Harrison’s recent anniversary release of All Things Must Pass had U.K. sales of 5.4K and in the US, 27.8k of which 99% were based on physical sales. Yes, tiny numbers compared with those from years gone by, but that is still around 15k more in a week and in just two countries than From Elvis in Nashville in 9 months. Fleetwood Mac’s "Rumours" had equivalent album sales last week of 15.4K. I guess that’s the only kind of comparison’s that you can make.
So have Sony come out and said that From Elvis in Nashville has sold less than 10 thousand worldwide?
Well it hasn’t unless you are talking about physical sales. But these days, it is easy for Nielsens to get the numbers via scanning etc.

Well I find it hard to believe that Sony would fork out the cost of remixing and packaging this release if they thought sales were going to be so low. Surely as a company in the business to make money that would be a definate big no no.

But you don’t know what Sony’s breakeven point is. And these days, Elvis is a drip feed seller so Sony might not be making a profit within a month of release but perhaps 12 months down the line and Sony may be happy with that kind of timeline. Sony know they have guaranteed sales in the first month via the collector fanbase and then other fans will buy as and when. When the Nashville set was first released, streaming in the first month or so was around 5k. In the following 8 months, that has increased by another 3k. And it might increase by a similar number in the next 6 months. And the physical release will probably sell a small number each week, but over time, that still increases the numbers. By Christmas, the set may have total sales of 20k. Okay nothing massive, but unlike decades ago when each territory was responsible for manufacturing and printing, these days, there are just a couple of places in the world that do it do economy of scale in production is not so much a problem.

Recently, Warner’s released some Bowie material on limited editions where overall world sales were around 10k on each release. They sold out on day one. Warner’s were obviously happy with those numbers. So perhaps the same numbers apply to Elvis.

yeah i basically agree with all this, ELVIS doesnt belong in a streaming world competing with Dua lipa and Ed sheeran .
he had his time, His legacy is intact and solid BUT he is from a whole different world

as for streaming, i dont really pay attention to it but i have seen some figures here and there & the big revelation for me was that the popular people have far more streams than i ever imagined , im talking 125 million streams for ed sheeran in a week and similar for dua lipa etc etc and yet the less streamed and i include our Elvis in that have almost pitiful figures in comparison - the gulf between them is massive !

But does it matter?? i dont think it does and im still surprised "nashville 71" has even made it to retail - i said all along it wouldnt because its not strong enough or relevant enough to barely recoup its cost and i dont think it ever would have if it wasnt to preserve the copyrights

THIS is the way ELVIS should be remembered! This is true greatness in the churchillian sense:
swaggering, daring, Proud yet humble, beaten yet never truly down,
MAGNIFICENT when victorious and always unforgettable! "

Presley was from a bygone era. I do not expect any kind of competitive sales in today’s market, ever.

I was looking at the track listings for this release…..I’m sorry but Elvis in 1971 is a shadow of the man from 1969 and 1970. A poor Christmas album
I really cant agree. IMO his 1971 Christmas record is a really very fine album I adore and love to play every december - without skipping a single track.
Love it since the first time I played it back in 1975.

A poor Christmas album, weakest of his gospel offerings and a half hearted attempt at a folk album. He bounces back in 1972 but, really, are we that excited about this year. I am an Elvis fan but I have to be honest…..Jmho

The producers are making the best of a very mixed group of recordings.

Some are great, many are okay, more than a few are substandard.

As I posted before, it's a long walk from American Sound in 1969 to Nashville in 1971.

1969 Memphis > 1970 Nashville > 1971 Nashville
Yep, by the time 71 came the quality of material was slim pickings. Whereas the 69 cuts gave us two extraordinary studio albums, 70 gave us two great albums and 71, well, they only gave us a couple of decent seasonal albums, at best. That’s why I feel kind of ripped off by RCA… the 71 cuts could have gave one good coherent secular album and that didn’t happen.

As I wrote previously, Elvis along with other iconic artists who are no longer around, whether it be Sinatra, Beatles, Queen or Jackson, all have their music available in the digital platforms but it is not designed to be competing with the big artists of today - it is simply an outlet for those who are interested in hearing the music and who do not want to buy into physical yet still provides a bonus income stream to the record companies.

Some write they are not that bothered about Elvis’ low sales figures, whilst others cling to chart entries. Last years Nashville set charted for 1 week in the U.K. at #70 and for some in their mindset, it was seen as a big achievement for an artist who has been dead for over 40 years. But we know Elvis has a solid collector fanbase who will buy any new release regardless of whether he died in 1977 - it sold just under 2,000 copies and Sony know they have guaranteed sales and I suspect that the very same people who bought that set will go and buy the Nashville ‘71 set. There may be slightly less physical sales over a period of time because of the lesser material on offer, but I’m sure Sony have worked the numbers over the years. And if it only needs physical sales of 7k for Sony to go into profit on each release, it doesn’t really matter. But if a release can capture better additional sales outside of the fanbase, then that makes it more rewarding in more ways than one.

But if we return to the post about the streaming numbers for "I’m Leavin", would we have had the post proclaiming that there must be some real continued interest in Elvis’ music and the forthcoming release had the number shown was close to 500 sales as opposed to half a million streams - the former certainly does not seem so spectacular and hardly demonstrates an interest in the truest sense and outside of the fanbase.

FWIW I like the packsging and never had a problem. Really don’t see how the cds can come through the cardboard. Never liked jewel cases as they crack, the lids eventually break etc.

I enjoy the Christmas album but I believe it could have been better. There just wasn’t enough good material. I always skipped Silver Bells and First Noel. Did not like them. I believe in the hybrid approach; The best of the Christmas cuts with a few of the best of the Gospel cuts. I prefer the alternate edgy takes of both I’ll Be Home On Christmas Day and Amazing Grace. These two versions would have added a more enjoyable listen on the Christmas album I believe. Works for me anyway!

These days, plastic is taboo. And consideration is also given to rack storage in shops and how to make releases more attractive to the consumer. An 8" box where artwork looks better especially the booklets which are a bit bigger to allow for bigger text is preferable to mini booklets where it is difficult to read the text and look at the historical bits and pieces that are also readable.
Making them taboo still doesn't help the fact that I can't get the CDs out of the cardboard without ripping the products I purchased.

It’s take 1. Sit back relax and leave the driving to Elvis. It’s like everyone is trying to pick fly sh*t out of pepper. Buy the set or don’t, but at least wait until it’s released before you declare it DOA.

No, that's the recording of "Padre."

Why don't you give it a rest ? I liked Padre from the moment I first heard it on release, still do and always will.

Everyone now realises you don't like the performance, which is your prerogative, but do you have to keep shoving your opinion down our throats ?

Very interesting stats there...

How do you find all this information ??

In other words, the song featured on Spotify is doing well ??

Thanks.

I'm not sure any of you know this and I apologize if this is on repeat, but I'm Leavin' (take 1) is available on Spotify.
This track is getting close to 500.000 streams so quite some fans are getting ready to explore this upcoming release, physical or digital.
That’s just over 411,700 streams which if a physical single track off the album would equate to sales of 411 copies which is slightly lower than the couple of preview tracks on the previous Nashville set ("I Washed My Hands" and "Funny How Times Slips Away"). That set in the last 9 months now has equivalent world sales of around 8,600 copies.

I just happen to know a couple of people who can tap into the relevant data and who are okay with giving me titbits of info every so often and as long as I do not abuse it be requesting info every few days.

The latest song is doing okay from fans wanting to listen to it and as I said mirrors the kind of activity seen when Sony uploaded a couple of review tracks from last year’s Nashville release. A month or so prior to the actual release of that set, "I Washed My Hands…" had streaming of just over 630,000 and since the actual release has gone on to just over 1 million and will no doubt continue to rise slightly as time goes by. The outtakes seem to hold little interest for streaming where the numbers are rather small compared to the finished song.

Whether this forthcoming set matches last years set with regard to sales is questionable….personally, I would be surprised if it does purely because of the material on offer, but then the inclusion of Christmas tracks on a release a month before Christmas may boost sales. Time will tell.

Well there will always be interest in Elvis like there is with many iconic artists from decades gone by, mostly on the strength of their relevant core fanbases. Elvis as an artist is simply too big for interest to completely disappear, but the interest will slowly drop down as years go by and Sony exhaust the viability of yearly releases - we are already seeing fans starting to take the "enough is enough..I just don’t need this" approach which within a few years will probably sound the death knell of future physical releases.

We know that 2022 will get covered with Elvis On Tour and probably the Baz movie and possibly 2023 with Aloha, but it is difficult to envisage anything worthwhile arriving in 2024 and beyond until maybe the 50th anniversary of his death in 2027. And that could be the line in the sand with regard physical releases of any importance going forward.

The enough is enough you wisely bring up to discussion really exists. I’d like to know if it’s something natural or if it’s helped by so many releases. How much money you’d need in 1987 or 1997 to get all the official releases and how much you’d need in 2020 or 2021 to buy all Sony and FTD releases. Not counting also the well capacity. I mean, a March 75 show or an outtake of There’s Always Me is very interesting for the first time. When you release 15 of them, it’s only natural that interest drops. Of course a hundred or a thousand or whatever the number will still get EVERYTHING. And it make sense, as the desert years will come again.
