Re: Elvis Presley At 3AM - Lake Tahoe 1973 (Memphis Recording Service)
One has to wonder why FTD has let these releases go without challenge for so long. It seems utterly absurd that they have done so - even more so when the first disc was released relatively recently on FTD. It seems highly doubtful that the stereo-isation would count as an unreleased work in the courts.RickGreekElvis wrote: ↑Sat Dec 16, 2023 8:31 pm

They're putting out the 3AM show on vinyl, too.

I am quite surprised by this as we all know where they got the audio from. Still sometimes the 'Stereo' they produce is impressive. Hmm?

I heard Closing Night 1972 released by MRS and the sound is better than the FTD version. I don't know exactly what they did, but the sound is clearer.

It’s been obvious that they’ve lifted from official sources, this release just makes it undeniable.

Re: Elvis Presley At 3AM - Lake Tahoe 1973 (Memphis Recording Service)
In some cases, it's been obvious. But, again, the Jan/Feb 1971 recordings were not, as FTD didn't release their versions until several months afterwards PLUS the sources in those cases were clearly different. MRS were seemingly working from copies several times removed from the clearer tapes FTD used. The same is true of the opening night 1972 release. That couldn't be from FTD, because FTD haven't released it.
That doesn't affect this release, though, which is clearly taken from the FTD - there is presumably no other source that they could have worked from.

Re: Elvis Presley At 3AM - Lake Tahoe 1973 (Memphis Recording Service)
One of the ways you can tell these sound so good is that I guess a lot of folks listen to SB's/Audience recordings on their headphones but with these MRS 'Stereo' versions you can listen on your normal Hi-Fi set up which really in many cases you can't really do with source material of this type.
I don't normally buy vinyl for SB's/Audience recordings but being in stereo it did sound a lot better. In fact the sound was so good at times I forgot I was listening to a SB/ Audience recording!

In response to comments above. I don’t get all of the MRS releases but the ones I have all sound better than FTD soundboards. Yes they are clearer sounding than FTD soundboards and move realistic.

I've always enjoyed the audience recording from the show on the 13th more than the newer soundboards...

Re: Elvis Presley At 3AM - Lake Tahoe 1973 (Memphis Recording Service)
My ultimate dream for the 3am show would be a matrix recording of the soundboard with stereo separation and the audience recordings as both sources are excellent. Anyway, matrix or not, they should be able to do nice things with these recordings. As they did with their previous releases.
You know, that version of "Dixie" and uh, the "Battle Hymn of the Republic," it's so beautiful!
The band he's put together is so over-the-top, and only Elvis would have that kinda spending power, and just audacious craziness. Choirs, and orchestras, and a great rhythm section, maybe another gospel group on the side. None of it makes sense until you suddenly hear something like that, and they're all playing a role in that, and it's very moving music. That's the pure joy of music in the man. You know, that's when I see everything stop.

But that’s the part we don’t know. Did anyone make copies of these soundboards back in the day. Someone said that all soundboards were recorded and given to RCA but if that was the case, how did Bruce Jackson end up with some that he then went on to sell to FTD. i would assume the earlier FTD releases are protected because they are not in public domain, but if there was another source that provided MRS, that’s not quite the same as just copying FTD discs.pmp wrote: ↑Sun Dec 17, 2023 1:16 amIn some cases, it's been obvious. I don’t think this is quite as crystal clear as many would like - if there was a copyright infringement, it doesn’t make any sense that Sony/FTD would simply ignore it. And as silly as this might seem, is there any chance that Sony or FTD sold the tapes (not licensed them) to MRS. It’s doubtful that Sony as a company would be interested in selling them via mainstream, and perhaps FTD see no further interest or reason to keep hold of them as they are unlikely to re-issue them. FTD get a quick cash injection and the risk of producing a new release falls onto MRS.

But E's 1954-1962 rec are PD in whole EU/Europa and just not only in UK... And before that, back in the 80s & early 90s). Because of relatively flexible copyright laws, the expiration date was between 15 and 25 years in many european country like e.g. them in the Scandinavia subregion. So already then could we Swede & Danes legal release things like this without having to ask RCA...

Re: Elvis Presley At 3AM - Lake Tahoe 1973 (Memphis Recording Service)
I very much doubt that there would be interaction between FTD and MRS along those lines. Certainly, the 1971 Jan/Feb set doesn't appear to come from the same tapes as the FTD release that followed it. The FTD has less distortion, for a start, and seems to have a much cleaner sound overall. We also know that the September 1970 soundboard has nothing to do with FTD. That said, if MRS aren't using the FTDs as their source on most other releases, it seems something of a coincidence that they are releasing the same concerts in the main.emjel wrote: ↑Sun Dec 17, 2023 3:23 amBut that’s the part we don’t know. Re: Elvis Presley At 3AM - Lake Tahoe 1973 (Memphis Recording Service)
You seem to be utterly oblivious to the fact that the US has public domain laws, too. Every country has them - and in some cases something will come out of copyright in one country first, and in some cases another country will see copyright expire first.drjohncarpenter wrote: ↑Sun Dec 17, 2023 2:14 am
U.K. PD laws are a corrupt grey market label's best friend.
For example, there are hundreds of classical Hollywood-era films that are in the public domain in the USA - that includes Fred Astaire's film Royal Wedding, the major film musical Till the Clouds Roll By, the 1945 Agatha Christie adaptation And Then There Were None, and a handful of the Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes films. Add to that list Night of the Living Dead, The Inspector General, Charade, A farewell to Arms, Meet John Doe, Santa Fe Trail, Too Late for Tears etc. Does this make America's PD laws a corrupt grey market? Likewise, any film copyrighted before the end of 1928 falls into the public domain in January in the USA. That means films like Dracula, Frankenstein, and All Quiet on the Western Front will all fall into the public domain in the USA within the next three or four years.
Likewise, many books fall into the public domain in the USA before they do elsewhere. There was a huge fight against this when the Sherlock Holmes stories fell into the public domain a few decades back - but the Doyle estate lost the fight. Likewise, several Agatha Christie novels (including The Murder of Roger Ackroyd) are in the public domain in the USA but are in copyright here in the UK until 2046.
Are we accusing the USA of a corrupt grey market? No. Partly because there's no such thing as a grey market. It's a term you made up. And a term that ultimately is meaningless.

Why am I not surprised? The MRS folks have quite the release schedule ahead of them, unless EJ and the guys decide to take legal action. I give them one thing though: their results are impressive.
